March 10, 1998 was a proud day for Christopher Cross fans! It started with a get-together at Planet Hollywood at 1:00 with Greg
Robins, myself , my friend
Gary Thomas, Scott
Gross his friend Aaron, and Doug
Machymomo. At 6:00, Gary and I arrived at the Galaxy Theatre. We got two seats right in front! During dinner we could see much activity. There seemed to be trouble with a set of lights. I had this sinking feeling that the concert might be cancelled! But, the problem was corrected in about half an hour. The concert began at around 8:30 with the atmospheric Rendezvous , followed by Never Be The Same. Chris mentioned that several of the songs to be performed were selected through a poll held on Crosstalk several months ago. All I can say to all the people on Crosstalk who voted - great selection! The first of these "non-hits" was the title-track from Back Of My Mind . Chris joked that this CD could be found in boxes of Breeze (tm) detergent! Then, of course, Chris' signature-song, Sailing. The next "non-hit-but-damn-well-should-have-been" was the title-cut to Every Turn Of The World. Chris and the band gave this a great 90's treatment (my ears are still ringing)! Chris followed with two from Rendezvous, the very smooth Deputy Dan (with Joel Peskin on saxophone, who performed on the original studio recording) and the up-tempo In The Blink Of An Eye . This was followed by Swept Away , another much-requested track, co-written by Steve Dorff. This song was used in an episode of Growing Pains and was nominated for an Emmy, but didn't win. Chris then switched to one of his acoustic guitars for the "unplugged" portion. The first tune, Think Of Laura started off at a slightly faster tempo, which gave the first verse a somewhat joyful quality about it. Chris dedicated the song to Carl Wilson. Chris stated that Carl was a major influence on his vocal style. This was followed by Minstrel Gigolo with Chris on acoustic and Rob on dulcimer! Rob held up the dulcimer and joked "What is this thing?!" This new treatment really worked well! Words Of Wisdom , a track from Another Page followed. (Chris, how do you hit those high notes!?) The "unplugged" portion wrapped up with two tunes Open Up My Window and Say You'll Be Mine , both duets with Gigi Worth. Chris and Gigi's voice blended perfectly. There was some debate here on Crosstalk, about a year ago regarding duets. Chris, you needn't look further than your own band! Chris dedicated the last tune to Nicolette Larson, who passed away late last year. Chris invited a guest soloist to play rhythm and lead on an accordion! Another nice touch! Chris and the band resumed the "plugged" portion with Alibi , one of my friend Gary's favorites. The "orchestral hit" in the studio version was replaced by a great extended drum-solo from Jody! This was followed by the sweeping Is There Something . Joel Peskin then rejoined the band for Arthur's Theme . Chris introduced Michael McDonald who got a standing ovation! Then, another signature song, Ride Like the Wind . The chorusing of Rob's, Mike's and Kiki's keyboards was amazing thoughout this song, along with Mike's unique voice! Chris and the band bowed and left the stage with a standing-ovation. They re-emerged to perform All Right , another uplifting song! After much applause, Chris brought the proceeding to an abrupt halt with an announcement. It seemed that the audio portion of the first performance of Rendezvous was lost. Chris announced that they'd have to re-do the song! (I was hoping that they'd lost the audio to Every Turn Of The World too!) After another standing-ovation, Chris announced that the video would be shown on Comcast at 5:00PM on Sunday, May 3 (Chris's birthday). Congrats to all! |
