Concert at the Starlight Bowl in Burbank, CA - Aug 3, 1997

Christopher Cross and Karla Bonoff packed the Starlight Bowl, bringing a hot, sticky August day to a close. Chris introduced a new song at this concert: Don't Tell Me I Dream Too Loud, the title-cut from his forthcoming CD. It was the first time I'd seen him perform alone on stage! Chris and Karla performed many of their previous hits, Sailing, Think Of Laura, Never Be The Same and All Right.
Chris also informed the audience of his web site: www.christophercross.com to which many replied to the next day.
The concert wound up around 9:30 with a rousing rendition of Ride Like The Wind. People of all ages were dancing in front of the stage; what Chris called his "mosh pit":) I met Chris briefly backstage
I had to be at work the next day in Palo Alto. I made the trip up Route 5 in 6 hours, arriving in San Francisco at the ungodly hour of 3:00 AM!

"Don't Tell Me I Dream Too Loud"

"and it's...All Right...think we're gonna make it...."

"gonna Ride Like The Wind...'til I get old...."
Chas Thomson
Christopher Cross
Karla Bonoff
Rob Meurer

"Thank you...thanks for listening.."

Here are what some of the fans had to say on Crosstalk following the concert.....

Hi Chris,
I just got back from your Burbank concert & wanted to thank you for a great evening of music. After all of the time & energy you've given in support of Jacob's Ladder, it was nice finally getting to see you play. Your vocals sounded great as did your guitar work. It was fun seeing Craig up there playing drums too. I hope you & your family are all doing well. Again, thanks for a wonderful night. Lisa

Chris,

We really enjoyed the evening...we could be wrong, but we think we saw Hal Robbins in the audience...he had a rifle, with a scope...Gil stopped him from doing anything that he may have later regretted...really, we loved the evening, and want to thank you for taking the time to so warmly greet us...thanks again!

We were impressed!

Thanks again!

Chris,
Thanks for a terrific show and performance tonite at the Burbank Starlight Bowl. You were in fine form, and the band was awesome.
Sharing the stage with Karla Bonoff was a stroke of genius. The two of you work unbelievably well together. I'd like to see more collaboration with you two.
I loved the new song, but wish you slowed the pace down, and use a more single note arpeggiated riff. Those arpeggiated riffs are a core characteristic of some of your greatest arrangements.
Thanks again for another"Pleasant Valley Sunday"
(this is what the Monkees were singing about 20 years ago). It was a real pleasure to hear such talented musicans who could actually perform.

Wow ! What a concert that was ! Chris, I guess you finally have your proof that your music transcends the generation gap, to see kids and younger adults dancing and enjoying your music proves that good music and artists are timeless.. !! I'm beginning to be a huge Karla fan too because of your concerts together ! A great evening in a great venue... To all of Chris' fans around the world, wish you could've seen it ! =)

Last song @ Burbank concert

We definitely became fans after last night's concert . . . thanks for a wonderful show. Particularily enjoyed the last song and would like the correct title. "Love came in the Window?" Will this song be on your new CD that has 'window' in the title?

Arline, let me see if I can help you with this.
The last song was "Open Up My Window" which is on Christopher's latest release titled "Window". This album was released in 1995 and is available in most record stores. If you cannot find it, it is available on the website under "CD Orders".
The song "Dream too Loud" which was the 5th song he sang last night, is the song from the album that is in development.
Hope that helps...

Oh, What a NIGHT!!
Posted by Vicki on August 04, 1997 at 14:01:34:

I had the choice of either going to hear you sing or
go see "Airforce One" w/Harrison Ford in a nice air conditioned theatre with cushy seats. I am SO glad I chose you over Harrison Ford.

Although I had a very mediocre hot dog and swatted bees all night, I really had a good time and didn't mind paying the $2.00. Seriously, I would have paid $4.00 to come hear you - No really, I would have paid a lot more to come hear you. You have always been one of my favorite artists and I am anxious to hear your next CD.
You & Karla compliment each other & I hope to see you both again soon.

Take care, God Bless and thank you & the entire band
for a wonderful evening @ the Starlight Bowl.

Vicki,
I take that as a great compliment I saw Air Force One and it's very exciting. We had a great time playing the show. The crowd was wonderful and made us feel very loved. Please keep and ear out for the new CD and keep in touch with us. Thanks CC

Your concert with Karla Bonoff was THE best concert I have ever attended. To be honest, although "Sailing" is one of my favorite songs (that opening guitar riff is haunting every time I hear it), I was there to see Ms. Bonoff. But your first song and your guitar playing on that Anderson Strat (yes, I'm a guitarist myself) instant won me over as a fan and admirer.

Thank you for appearing at the Starlight, and please, please return to the L.A. area soon with Ms. Bonoff. You and Ms. Bonoff are an unbeatable bill.

I part with some pressing questions: Is that an electric 12-string on the studio "Sailing," were you playing it, and have you always played guitar on your recordings?

Ray, Thanks so much for joining KB and I the other night. We enjoyed playing for you all. On "Sailing" I used a Martin D28 acoustic and doubled it with a strat with some stereo chorus on it. That is a sound I use alot an acc and elct doubled. Yes except for occasional solos by freinds like EJ or Carlton I play all the gtr on my CD's .Keep in touch .CC

Ciao Christopher, I am an Italian fan who was lucky enough to be around LA at the right time ! I really enjoyed your "almost-free" concert of sunday night; your beatiful songs did sound great as ever and it was amazing hearing you playing those Graydon- Lukather solos note by note ! Keep writing and singing... we don't really need all of that promotion to understand where to find good music. I am proud to have your complete discography back in Rome !
Thank you again for sunday and for years of great songs,
Emilio

Hi there,

I am from Norway, but was fortunate enough to be on vacation in L.A. in July and August, so I was able to go to the Burbank concert. I have to say it was fantastic and one of the musical highlights of my vacation. (I also went to a bunch of other concerts while I was in L.A., including Larry Carlton and 3 days at the Long Beach Jazz Festival.) CC was great, both his voice and his guitar playing. The band was excellent too! CC, could you say a few words about your drummer? I hadn't heard of him before, and he was great! The song from your upcoming album was excellent!

CC, thanks for a fantastic show, and Greg, thanks for faxing directions to me while I was in Denver. Sorry we didn't meet in Burbank, but I didn't have net access while I was in L.A. and wasn't know how to reach you.

Best regards,
Morten

P.S. Greg, any more CC Trivia questions coming up? ;)
